Last winter, when I originally asked Jana Alayra to speak at FCA on April 18th, I admit I had no idea I was asking her to speak on Good Friday. In the routine of scheduling speakers for every Friday in the academic year, I I failed to remember that April 18th would be a special Friday, that we would be celebrating Good Friday. So in my craziness, I did not think twice about who would be sharing on this life-changing holiday until about two weeks before the date. As I sat down at my computer and pulled up my speaker schedule, my “ohhh shoot I should have planned this one a little more carefully” apprehension quickly transformed into utter joy. Jana Alayra was speaking on Good Friday.
For those of you who have heard Jana’s testimony, you know how God uses the trials and victories in her story to bring incredible encouragement and inspiration to those who listen. Her life is a picture of sweet surrender to God and absolute faith in His perfect plan. On this special Friday, Jana’s testimony was transformed into a picture of how much God grieved the loss of His son when He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins.
As I sat in the bleachers at Newport Harbor listening to Jana share and silently thanking God for orchestrating such a perfect huddle, my thoughts were interrupted by a high school girl leaning over to her friend and whispering, “I could listen to her all day.” I couldn’t help but smile and nod in agreement. And I truly think that all of us squeezed into the gym that Friday really would have been content to hear about God’s sacrifice and His love for us all day long.
