Walking into Newport Harbor’s gym on Friday afternoon, Kevin Hansen felt a little out of place. The gym of course, was familiar. As a Corona del Mar graduate, Kevin had played in plenty of basketball and volleyball Battle of the Bay games at Harbor. The discomfort came from his slacks and button down. As an international professional volleyball player, member of the USA National Team, and a gold medal Olympian, Kevin is used to walking into a gym prepared to dominate in his team uniform. But on May 2nd, Kevin entered the gym with a different purpose. He came to share his testimony with high school students eager to learn about his journey. Kevin spoke of God’s faithfulness and how God always had a plan for him, even when it didn’t make sense at the time. He encouraged the students to pursue God wholeheartedly and to trust Him in all situations. And then, of course, he let the students try on his medal.
Show and tell with an Olympian always is an exciting and unique experience for our students!
Newport Harbor leaders strike a pose with Kevin (and steal his medal).
Fun fact: Kevin and some of his friends started “Club Fish” when they were in high school. It was less than ten guys who wanted to meet on campus at lunch to talk about their faith. When FCA first came on campus at CdM, the Club Fish students became FCA’s first leaders! A little bit more than ten people come now…
It was really special for Kevin to share in the gym where his jersey was retired after an incredible career as a high school, college, and professional athlete.
