Former USC wide receiver and Young Life director Robbie Boyer visited Corona del Mar high school to remind the students that, not only does God love them, but that he also likes them.
Robbie shared that during his freshman year at USC, he struggled with his sense of identity as he went from the star high school football player to the bottom of the totem pole at SC. He explained that his sense of self was so wrapped up in his performance on the football field that he became increasingly discouraged when he got to SC and found himself sitting on the sidelines during his freshman year.
Even though Robbie grew up in a Christian home and knew he should turn to God with his frustration, instead he turned to the party scene. One day, when Robbie was feeling at his worst, he was reminded that God loves him unconditionally. Robbie went on to explain that, not only did he experience God’s love in a new way, but he realized that God actually liked him. Robbie declared that, even when he was feeling at his worst, God wanted to hang out with him and laugh at his jokes! He shared Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” and encouraged the students to remember that no matter how low they might feel, God still loves them and is longing for relationship with them.
